How to wear metallic makeup for Christmas & New Year

We all remember how popular glitter and metallic makeup has been over the decades and for the last 12 months its been back on trend and rocking the Runways, Hollywood and Social Media. Metallic makeup doesn’t have to be avant garde or for the brave or young, as long as you choose the right colours you can create a beautiful look for a night out.

Tips & Tricks for applying metallic makeup like a pro

Use a primer. Metallic makeup, like glitter makeup, needs an even base so that it goes on smoothly. Before applying any makeup, but especially before applying eye makeup, use a primer to help prevent creases and increase longevity. I like to use Garnier 5 Second Blur Primer both in my makeup kit and personally. It has a lovely soft finish and doesn’t dry out the skin.

Pick tones & colours that flatter your complexion.  You shouldn’t be scared of wearing metallics as it is just like wearing jewellery. The rule of thumb is to wear a colour that suits your skin tone best however this rule isn’t set in stone and you can choose any shade you want to wear and add a contrast to your skin tone. Stick to darker shades for lighter skin tones and lighter shades for darker skin tones, however on photo shoots and younger clients I mix this up as the contrast can look very complementary and doesn’t wash you out as you might think.

The options are shades of silver, metal, bronze and gold. Alternatively you now have coloured metallics in every shade of the rainbow.

I love using all of my professional palettes and single pots of pigment however for a cheaper and easier to use option, I always suggest the palette which I keep in my makeup bag, The Barry M Cosmetics Deluxe Metals Eye shadow Palette.

Add a pop of metallic color to your lips. To add some shimmer to your lips, paint your lips with a metallic lipstick.

Transform your non-metallic makeup into metallic makeup. If you don’t want to totally restock your makeup bag with products that you may only wear during the festive season, simply pick up a few loose metallic eye shadow pigments that you can layer and mix with any of your creamy lipsticks or eye shadows to instantly give a magically metallic makeup look.
